Korčula ferry: a twenty-minute crossing that lands three kilometres out of town

Car ferry 634 crosses from Korčula to Orebić on Pelješac in twenty minutes, twenty-two times a day between 3 July and 30 August. It berths at Dominče, roughly three kilometres from Korčula town, and it is one of only two registered services to the island that take a car.

Every registered service to the island

Korčula is the best-connected island in southern Dalmatia, but the connections arrive at four different places. The town is at the eastern tip; Vela Luka is at the western end, some forty kilometres of road away; Prigradica and Dominče are smaller again. Booking the island rather than the port is the standard mistake here.

Of the 13 routes on that list, 2 carry a vehicle: line 634 to Dominče, and car ferry 604, which reaches the island at Vela Luka on its way between Lastovo and Split. Everything else on the list is a catamaran or a passenger ship, and none of the 33 catamarans on the register takes a car.

Dominče is not Korčula town

Line 634 is published as Korčula/Dominče – Orebić, and the timetable states plainly that the ferry berths at Dominče, roughly three kilometres from the town, not in the town harbour itself. Arriving without a vehicle and expecting to walk into the old town is a common and avoidable error.

The foot-passenger alternative is line 614, a state passenger ship on the same Orebić crossing, which does use the town. If you are on foot, take 614; if you have the car, take 634 and accept the three kilometres at the far end.

What the crossing costs

The Orebić crossing is the cheapest meaningful sea link in Dalmatia and the only one on this island that takes a vehicle. Set it against the two catamaran approaches below: the blanks on the vehicle rows are the point, not an omission. Tariffs change on 29 May and revert on 27 September.

Frequency is the reason the Orebić crossing beats the through-boats for anyone based on the mainland side. At 22 sailings a day in high season the ferry stops being a booking and becomes a bus. The catamarans from Split run once a day and have to be planned around, which is covered on the staged southern route page.

One more thing the table settles. Vela Luka is not a substitute for Korčula town. It is a working port at the opposite end of a long, thin island, and the car ferry and catamaran that serve it are running to Lastovo and Split rather than around the island. Arriving there because it was the sailing that fitted your day is how people lose an afternoon to a bus.

What do you need to work out next?

The crossing is settled. These follow.
