The land is ahead of the water by about six weeks
May is the first month of the year with warm days in it — 9.1 at Split, 6.5 at Hvar, 4.2 at Dubrovnik, 6.3 even at Pazin in inland Istria. Sunshine is at 8.8 hours a day, higher than September’s 8.2. Every land-based signal says summer has arrived.
The sea says otherwise. At 17.3°C the water at Split in May is cooler than it is in October (19.3°C) and much cooler than in September (21.7°C). Hvar and Dubrovnik both sit at 17.2°C. This is the single most misread fact about a May trip: people book May expecting a quieter August and get a warm, bright, dry month with a sea most northern Europeans will manage for about four minutes.

Drag that to September and the reason May underperforms becomes obvious: the same station, four months later, has a sea four and a half degrees warmer. May's advantage is everything except the water.

Nothing above 30°C anywhere, to one decimal place, except a statistical rounding at Split and Pazin. That is what makes May the strongest month of the year for anything involving effort: walking, cycling, Plitvice, Krka, the Dubrovnik walls, Vidova gora on Brač at 780 m. In July the same routes are done at 30.0°C mean daily maximum.
The 29th of May
The one date that matters commercially falls inside the month rather than at either end of it. On 29 May the tariff season begins on every line checked, and it does not end until 27 September. The timetable moves on the same day on line 634 between Korčula and Orebić: 14 sailings a day becomes 20.
Booking a return that straddles 29 May
An outbound on 27 May and a return on 2 June are priced in two different tariff seasons. On the Vis car ferry that is €40.60 out and €52.00 back for a car under 5 m; on foot, €7.20 against €9.10. Nothing about the crossing itself changes.
The reverse trick works in your favour. A whole trip finished by 28 May is bought entirely at off-season rates while enjoying nine warm days and nearly nine hours of sun a day. That is the best value week in the Croatian calendar, and it is invisible unless you look at the tariff calendar rather than the weather one.
What to do with a May trip
Treat the sea as scenery and the land as the product. Base somewhere with substance on shore — Split, Istria, Zadar — and use the islands for their interiors and their harbours rather than their beaches. If swimming is the point of the holiday, the honest answer is that May is the wrong month and September is the right one.
What to decide before you book
- You want to walk or cycle. May is the best month of the year: no station averages a day above 30°C.
- You want to swim. 17.3°C at Split. Colder than October. Move the trip or accept it.
- You are watching the budget. Finish by 28 May and every crossing is off-season: €7.20 rather than €9.10 to Vis.
- You are island hopping. After 29 May line 634 runs 20 sailings a day, so late May is the easier half.
