Walking in Croatia is a shoulder-season activity on the coast and an unquantified one in the mountains. Split’s July record is 29.5 days at or above 25 °C and 16.5 at or above 30; May gives 9.1 and 0.1. Plan around that.
Eight stations, and what they say about walking
The useful way to read a climate table for walking is not the mean temperature. It is the count of days over a threshold, because a mean of 25 °C conceals whether that came from thirty warm days or fifteen hot ones. The published normals give both counts, and the difference between July and September is stark enough that it should decide the dates before anything else does.

Hvar is the hottest of the group by warm-day count and Pazin, the only inland station, records 10.7 days at or above 30 °C in July — more than Rovinj on the coast at 9.7. That kills the usual assumption that walking routes should be moved inland in summer. The correct move is not inland; it is later. Every station on the list drops to a single figure of warm days by October, and none of them records a day above 30 °C in that month.
The autumn cliff, on the long record
The Split Marjan station has a separate and much longer series, running from 1948 to 2024. It is a different dataset from the normals above and should not be mixed into the same table, but it makes the seasonal shape unmistakable across three quarters of a century.

September holds 17 days at or above 25 °C on that series and October holds one. There is no gentle decline; there is a cliff between the two months, and it lands exactly where the walking season should. The same record puts July sunshine at 353.3 hours for the month and July rainfall at 26.6 mm, against 115.5 mm in November — so the trade for the empty trails of late autumn is real weather, not just cooler weather.
What this record does not cover
It covers no mountain. The stations used on this site are Split, Hvar, Dubrovnik, Zadar, Rovinj, Rijeka and Mali Lošinj on the coast and islands, plus Pazin inland in Istria. The high Velebit stations are not among them. Croatia’s best-known long-distance walking is on that chain, at altitudes where snow, wind and season behave nothing like a seafront station, and no figure for it appears on this page because none is available to quote.
What the data does support is the low ground, which is most of what visitors actually walk: island ridges and coastal paths. The highest points on the islands are Vidova gora on Brač at 780 m, Gorica on Cres at 648 m and Sv. Nikola on Hvar at 626 m — ascents from sea level, in the open, with no shade at the top. In July, at 30 °C, that is the whole problem in one sentence.
The island walking also has a shape the mainland does not: it is almost all ascent and descent from a port, with no through-route, because the register records 78 islands and 52 of them permanently inhabited — small units, reached and left by the same pier. That makes the day easy to plan and hard to shorten. Once you are on the island you are committed to the boat you came for, and the walk has to fit between two crossings rather than the other way round.

Late September and early October on the coast. September gives 15.4 days at or above 25 °C at Split and 1.1 above 30; October gives 1.3 and none.
Is it cooler to walk inland?
Not in Istria. Pazin records 10.7 days at or above 30 °C in July against Rovinj’s 9.7 on the coast.
What about the mountains?
This page carries no mountain figures. The climate normals it uses have no station on the Velebit chain, and substituting a coastal one would be a fabrication.
Is May as good as September?
For temperature, better: 9.1 warm days and 0.1 hot ones at Split. For everything else — sea temperature, daylight, the number of boats running — September is ahead.
