Why March and November are not the same month backwards
Air temperature in March and November looks almost interchangeable: 10.6°C against 12.0°C at Split, 11.1°C against 13.3°C at Hvar. Travellers reason from that and assume the two shoulder ends are equivalent. They are not, because the sea does not follow the air. Water holds heat for weeks, so it arrives at March having spent the whole winter cooling and arrives at November having spent the whole summer warming.

The rest of the March picture is better than its reputation. Sunshine is already at 6.0 hours a day at Split and 6.3 at Hvar, up from 4.3 in January. Rainfall has come off its winter peak: 63.4 mm at Split against 101.7 mm in November. Inland Istria is still cold — Pazin averages 6.4°C with a mean daily minimum of 0.5°C — but the coast is dry, bright and empty.

What is actually running
March sits deep inside the off-season on every line checked: the tariff season does not begin until 29 May. Line 634 between Korčula and Orebić runs 14 sailings a day rather than 22, which is still a boat every hour or so across a 20-minute crossing, so the mainland-to-island links most people need are intact.
The gaps are elsewhere. Line 9807 out of Dubrovnik does not call at Ubli, Korčula or Polače outside summer at all — it runs Sobra to Šipanska Luka to Dubrovnik and nothing more. Mljet’s northern port and Lastovo are simply not connected to Dubrovnik in March. And the 17 commercial lines in the 2026 register carry no public service obligation, so nothing compels them to sail. The network as a whole shrinks to its state core.
Booking a March island week from the air temperature
The number that decides an island week in March is not 10.6°C, it is the sailing count and the route map. A day trip that exists in July may have no vehicle at all in March, and the southern catamaran that looks like it links Dubrovnik to Korčula is running a three-port shuttle instead.

- Cities. Split, Zadar, Zagreb and Dubrovnik at 6 hours of sun a day and no cruise call.
- Driving. The coast road is empty and the ferries take a car at off-season tariff.
- National parks. Plitvice and Krka in full flow after the winter rain.
- Not swimming. At 11.9°C the sea is a photograph, not an activity.
If the trip is fixed to March, weight it towards Split and the interior rather than towards islands and beaches. If the trip is movable, the same money buys warm water in October.
