Croatia in April: the cheapest month to move a car, and a 13.8°C sea

April is the month Croatia’s air catches its sea. At Split both sit at roughly 13.7°C and 13.8°C. Sunshine reaches 7.0 hours a day, warm days are still statistically zero, and ferry fares stay at off-season rates until 28 May.

The crossover

For five months of the year the sea at Split is warmer than the air above it. In April that reverses: 13.7°C air against 13.8°C sea, effectively level, and from May onwards the air pulls away. It is a neat marker of where the year has got to, and a warning about what April is not. A sea at 13.8°C is warmer than March’s but it is nowhere near swimming; the autumn does not fall back to that reading until December, at 13.7°C.

The spread across that table is the real April story. Hvar reaches a 17.7°C daily maximum with 7.0 rain days; Pazin, 30 km inland in Istria, reaches 16.2°C by day but falls to 3.9°C at night and takes 9.1 rain days. Istria in April is a different climate from Dalmatia in April, not a cooler version of it.

April is the last of the cheap crossings

The tariff season on every line checked runs 29 May to 27 September. Everything before it is off-season, and the gap is not trivial: on the Vis car ferry a car under 5 m is €40.60 rather than €52.00. If the trip involves a vehicle and any flexibility on dates, April is the month that pays for itself.

Note the blank that is not in the table: the fast catamarans have no car row because they cannot take one. The saving on a vehicle only exists on the car ferries, which is a point worth settling before you hire anything — see driving in Croatia.

Treating Easter as a season boundary

Croatian ferry tariffs do not move with Easter, and Croatia does not shift public holidays to the nearest Monday the way the UK does. A holiday falling on a Saturday stays on the Saturday. The one date that changes what you pay on the water is 29 May.

What Easter does change is occupancy. Coastal towns open up for it and close again afterwards, so an April trip either side of Easter can find restaurants shut while the ferries run perfectly normally. Book accommodation on the assumption that the town is only half awake.

What April is for

Istria and the interior come into their own before Dalmatia does, because neither depends on the sea. Rovinj at a 16.7°C daily maximum with 7.3 rain days is a comfortable walking town. Plitvice is at full water and not yet at full coach. On the Dalmatian coast April is for the towns, the islands’ interiors and the road, not the water.

What to decide before you book

  • You are bringing a car. Cross before 28 May: €40.60 to Vis rather than €52.00.
  • You want warm water. Not in April. 13.8°C at Split is the same as late November.
  • You are going to Istria. April suits it: Rovinj’s daily max is 16.7°C, Pazin’s night is 3.9°C.
  • Easter falls in your window. Expect open towns and normal boats, then a quiet fortnight after.

What do you need to work out next?

April decided. The next questions are about where, not when.
