Croatia in December: 4.2 hours of sun a day, and the country moves inland

December is Croatia’s darkest month: 4.2 hours of sun a day at Split and 120.8 hours across the whole month on the long Marjan record. The sea holds 13.7°C, warmer than it manages in March. Winter travel in Croatia is inland travel, and the numbers say so.

The darkest month, not the coldest

December is not the coldest month — January and February are, by 1.1°C and 0.7°C at Split. It is the darkest by a clear margin. Sunshine falls to 4.2 hours a day at Split, 4.0 at Hvar, 3.2 at Rovinj and 2.4 at Pazin. The long Split Marjan record puts the month at 120.8 hours in total, the lowest of the twelve; July on the same record carries 353.3.

Rainfall has come off November’s peak: 90.8 mm at Split against 101.7 mm, 119.8 mm at Dubrovnik against 142.3 mm. The sea is at 13.7°C, which is warmer than March’s 11.9°C and almost exactly April’s 13.8°C. The water is still six weeks behind the calendar and it will keep falling until February.

The country moves inland

The clearest measurement of Croatian winter is not a temperature, it is a passenger count. In November 2025 Zagreb airport handled 337,851 passengers. Split handled 62,250 and Dubrovnik 49,275. In June 2025 Split alone handled around 578,000 — roughly nine times its own November figure. Zagreb is the only genuine year-round hub in the country, and it is not on the coast.

AirportNovember 2025June 2025What it serves
Zagreb (ZAG)337,851—The only genuine year-round hub. Inland.
Split (SPU)62,250~578,000Central Dalmatia and the island ferries. Intensely seasonal.
Dubrovnik (DBV)49,275—The far south, the Elafiti, cruise connections.
Zadar (ZAD)——Northern Dalmatia and the Kornati. Budget carriers.
Pula (PUY)——Istria. Strongest German and Austrian links.
Rijeka (RJK)——Kvarner, Krk and Opatija. Small.

The practical consequence is route availability. A December trip routed through Zagreb has options; one routed through Split or Dubrovnik is working with a fraction of the summer schedule. Plan the flight before the itinerary, which is the reverse of the summer order — see flights to Croatia.

Ferries in December

December is off-season tariff throughout, and the network is at its winter shape. Line 807 to the Elafiti runs four sailings a day Monday to Saturday but only two on Sundays and holidays, with the first out of Suđurađ at 06:00 and the last back from Dubrovnik at 20:00. Line 602 to Vis is at 2 sailings a day. Line 9807 serves Sobra, Šipanska Luka and Dubrovnik only.

Planning a December island day around a Sunday

The Elafiti service halves on Sundays and public holidays, from four sailings a day to two, and Croatia does not move public holidays to the nearest Monday — a holiday that falls on a Sunday stays there and takes the timetable with it.

A December day trip to Lopud or Šipan built on a Sunday therefore has two boats, not four, and the return options collapse accordingly. Build the day around a weekday, or around the 20:00 return, and check that the 15:20 sailing is not the one you need — it does not call at Lopud.

What December is for

Zagreb, Istria and food. The euro replaced the kuna on 1 January 2023 at a fixed 7.53450 HRK to €1 and Croatia joined the Schengen area the same day, so a December city break from elsewhere in the EU has neither a border queue nor a currency exchange — see currency in Croatia. What December is not is a coastal holiday. The islands are running a resident’s timetable and the sun sets on a four-hour day.

What to decide before you book

  • You are flying in December. Route through Zagreb: 337,851 passengers in November 2025 against Split’s 62,250.
  • You want daylight. There is very little: 4.2 hours a day at Split, 2.4 at Pazin.
  • You want an island day. Avoid Sundays and holidays — line 807 halves to two sailings.
  • You are worried about money. Off-season tariff throughout, and the euro removes the exchange step entirely.

What do you need to work out next?

December is an inland month. That decides the airport first.
