The published network is the baseline
Croatia’s coastal shipping is not a mystery to be bought blind. Agencija ZOLPP publishes a register of every scheduled sea line in the country, with the operator, the vessel type, the ports and the tariff, and it is a public document. Whatever a cruise quotes you covers the same islands, in the same months, on water that already has boats on it.
There are 68 routes in the 2026 register. 24 of them carry a vehicle; the other 44 are foot-passenger boats, which is the same thing a cruise passenger is. That matters because it sets the comparison: for a person with a bag and no car, most of this coast is already connected.

Read that table as a price sheet rather than a fleet list. Every catamaran row is a boat you can walk onto with a ticket, and the fares are published per line and per season — Split to Hvar on line 9604 is €10.00 in season and €6.40 outside it.

Line 9604 crosses Split to Hvar for €10.00 between 29 May and 27 September, and €6.40 outside that window. Foot passengers only, one rotation a day, and anyone can buy the ticket. Vela Luka on Korčula is €11.00, Ubli on Lastovo €12.00.
Neither column is the right answer for everyone. The useful question is narrower: does your route hold together on the dates you have? That is a timetable question, and it has a published answer. The ferry network page sets out all 68 routes one at a time.
Where assembling it yourself stops working
Two places, both of them specific. The first is the southern chain: state line 9807 runs its full Ubli–Korčula–Polače–Sobra–Šipanska Luka–Dubrovnik route only from 3 July to 30 August, and in the off-season register period it serves Sobra, Šipanska Luka and Dubrovnik alone. The second is the commercial half of the network, which exists because summer demand exists.
Seventeen of the routes are not promises
17 of the 68 routes in the register are commercial lines carrying no public service obligation. The state lines have to run; these do not. They are the fast, direct, convenient ones — including every catamaran that carries you from Split to Dubrovnik in a single day.
The cost of getting this wrong is not a missed boat. It is a plan built in March around a service that goes on sale in May and sails from June, on a coast where the alternative is a bus. If your dates sit outside high summer, check which of your legs are commercial before anything else is booked.
This is the honest case for buying a cruise rather than assembling one: not that the boats do not exist, but that in May, June, September and October the through-legs are the ones that break. It is also the case against, in July and August, when the small-ship chain and the scheduled network cover much the same ports.
