Croatia bike tours: inland Istria is not the cool option

Riding inland to escape the coast does not work in Croatia. Pazin, the inland Istria station, records 11.8 days at or above 30 °C in August against Rovinj’s 11.5. What the interior buys is colder nights, not cooler afternoons. Ride in May or late September.

The inland assumption, tested

Almost every cycling itinerary sold in Croatia leans on Istria, and almost every one of them implies that the interior is the gentler option in summer. There is one inland station in the published normals — Pazin — and it says otherwise. Set it against Rovinj, forty-odd kilometres away on the coast, and the afternoons are the same while the nights are not.

August is the clearest row. Pazin’s mean daily maximum is 28.5 °C and Rovinj’s is 28.7 °C, statistically the same afternoon. Pazin then falls to 12.9 °C overnight against Rovinj’s 17.2 °C. Riding inland gives you a better night’s sleep and a cold early start. It does not give you a cooler climb at two in the afternoon, and Pazin actually logs more days at or above 30 °C in August — 11.8 against 11.5.

The strip makes the season obvious. Everything from June to September is compromised and July and August are simply the wrong months to plan a riding week around. The interior also carries more rain: Pazin logs 102.8 mm in September against Rovinj’s 83.1 mm, and 9.0 rain days in June against 6.9. Spring and early autumn are still the answer; they are just wetter inland than the coastal brochure suggests.

On the Dalmatian side the numbers are harsher again. Split records 29.5 days at or above 25 °C in July and 16.5 at or above 30, against 9.1 and 0.1 in May. A riding holiday in Dalmatia in July is a riding holiday that starts at six in the morning and stops at ten, whatever the itinerary says.

Getting the bike onto a boat

The second constraint is the one that surprises people who have ridden in Italy or Greece. Croatia’s fast catamarans are foot-passenger vessels. They do not have a vehicle tariff at all, and a bicycle sits on the vehicle side of the tariff. If a route between two islands only has a catamaran, the bike does not make the crossing.

Line 9604 has no bicycle row because the vessel cannot take one, which is the honest answer rather than a gap in the data. The pattern holds across the coast: 24 routes carry vehicles and every one of them is a state car ferry, while all 17 commercial routes are catamarans. A riding itinerary that hops islands is therefore an itinerary built on car ferries, and car ferries are the slower, less frequent half of the network.

The fare side is mild by comparison. A bicycle crosses at the same price as a foot passenger on both verified lines: €4.40 on the twenty-minute Korčula crossing in season and €9.10 on the run to Vis, against €52.00 for a car under five metres on the same sailing. Riding rather than driving is the cheap option here by a factor of five, and it removes the vehicle deck from the problem entirely.

The tariff dates are worth noting for a spring or autumn tour. Off-season runs 1 January to 28 May and 28 September to 31 December; the seasonal tariff runs 29 May to 27 September. A riding week starting in the third week of May is off-season on price and pre-season on frequency, which is the cheapest and quietest combination the calendar offers — and the reason May beats late September on cost even where the weather is comparable.

Planning island hops on the fast boats

A route that reads Split — Hvar — Korčula in an afternoon is a catamaran route. With a bicycle it is not available at any price, because no bicycle fare exists on those vessels.

Rebuild the same week on car ferries and it becomes a different trip: fewer sailings, longer crossings, and ports that are not always the town. Line 634 lands at Dominče, roughly 3 km outside Korčula town, which is a trivial distance on a bike and a real one with luggage. That is one of the few places where arriving by bicycle is the advantage.

What do you need to work out next?

The month and the boats are settled. Then these.
