Eight of Croatia’s 68 registered ferry routes touch Dubrovnik and exactly one carries a vehicle. The Elafiti run four sailings a day Monday to Saturday and two on Sundays and holidays. Mljet’s Polače is not served outside 29 May to 30 August.
A small network, and it moves with the calendar
Dubrovnik has the reputation of a hub and the register of a terminus. Eight routes touch it against Split’s twenty-three, four of the eight are commercial catamarans with no obligation to sail, and one service in total will carry a car. What you can do here beyond the walls is therefore a short, precisely dated list rather than an open menu.
| Where | Lines | When it runs | What the timetable says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Koločep (Donje Čelo) | 807, 831 | All year | Four sailings a day Mon–Sat on 807, two on Sundays and holidays |
| Lopud | 807, 831 | All year | Same frequency; the 15:20 sailing out of Suđurađ does not call here |
| Šipan (Suđurađ) | 807, 831 | All year | First sailing out of Suđurađ at 06:00 |
| Šipanska Luka (Šipan) | 9807 | All year | Served even when the rest of 9807 is cut back |
| Sobra (Mljet) | 9807, 9808 | All year | The only Mljet call served outside the summer |
| Polače (Mljet) | 9807 | Not outside 29 May – 30 Aug | Outside that window line 9807 serves Sobra, Šipanska Luka and Dubrovnik only |
| Korčula | 9807, 9808 and two commercial catamarans | 9807 full route 3 Jul – 30 Aug only | 9808 is in the register; its per-line timetable is not in the verified bundle |
| Split, Hvar, Milna, Pomena | Commercial catamarans only | Summer demand | No state line links Dubrovnik with the Split network |
The bottom row is the one that surprises people. No state line connects Dubrovnik with Split, Hvar or Brač — the boats that join the two ends of the Dalmatian coast are all commercial services, which means they exist because August exists. An itinerary that treats the coastal run as a fixed piece of infrastructure is treating a summer product as a public service.
Line 9807, and where it stops calling
One line does most of the work in the far south, and it is worth reading leg by leg. State catamaran 9807 runs from Ubli on Lastovo through Korčula, Polače and Sobra on Mljet and Šipanska Luka to Dubrovnik. Its full route runs only from 3 July to 30 August.
Every rotation starts or ends here. Served all year.
Served all year, and the only Elafiti call on this line.
Served all year. The eastern harbour on Mljet.
Not served outside 29 May to 30 August.
Served on the full route only, 3 July to 30 August.
Served on the full route only, 3 July to 30 August.
Outside 29 May to 30 August the line serves Sobra, Šipanska Luka and Dubrovnik and nothing else: Ubli, Korčula and Polače are not reduced in frequency, they are not served at all. There is no off-season fare published for Dubrovnik to Korčula or Dubrovnik to Polače, because outside the window the sailing does not exist. Mljet is still reachable at Sobra all year.
Booking a Sunday for the Elafiti
Line 807, the Jadrolinija passenger ship serving Koločep, Lopud and Šipan, runs four sailings a day Monday to Saturday and two on Sundays and holidays. The fare is the same to all three islands — €3.40 off-season and €5.40 in season — but the frequency is not the same on every day of the week.
Four sailings will carry a two-island day. Two will not carry any hopping at all: it is one island, one crossing out and one back. If the only free day in the trip falls on a Sunday or a public holiday, pick a single island and stay on it. Croatia does not move public holidays to the nearest Monday, so a mid-week holiday cuts the service on the day it falls.
Line 831 is the car ferry on the same run, and the register confirms it carries vehicles to the same three islands. Its per-line timetable is not in the verified bundle, so no sailing times or fares for it appear here. Since the Elafiti are small and the ship is slow, the practical answer for most visitors is the passenger service anyway — see the Elafiti in detail.
Scale is the thing to hold on to. Eight routes is not a network in the sense that Split’s twenty-three or Zadar’s sixteen are. Four of the eight are commercial catamarans, which leaves four state services with an obligation to sail: three of them call in the Elafiti and two of them reach Mljet at Sobra. That is the whole year-round list, and everything else on a Dubrovnik itinerary happens on land.
The month decides more here than anywhere else
Dubrovnik’s DHMZ station is one of the three that publishes a sea temperature, and its numbers explain why the shoulder season here behaves differently from central Dalmatia. The sea holds up; the rain does not.
| Month | Sea °C | Days ≥25 °C | Rainfall mm | Rain days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| August | 23.3 | 28.6 | 72.5 | 3.8 |
| September | 21.8 | 16.7 | 86.1 | 5.4 |
| October | 19.5 | 1.9 | 120.1 | 8.2 |
| November | 16.6 | 0.0 | 142.3 | 10.1 |
October brings 120.1 mm of rain across 8.2 wet days and November 142.3 mm across 10.1 — the wettest autumn of any measured station on this coast, and about half as much again as Split’s 82.1 mm in October. The sea is still 19.5 °C, so the swimming argument survives the month that the walking argument does not.

Set that against the ferry calendar and the shape of a Dubrovnik trip becomes obvious. July and August buy you the full network and the driest weeks. September keeps the sea at 21.8 °C and 16.7 warm days but has already lost Korčula and Polače from line 9807. October keeps the sea and loses the weather. October in detail sets out the trade.
sailings a day on line 807
Enough for two islands in a day
First departure out of Suđurađ at 06:00, last back from Dubrovnik at 20:00. Four rotations will carry Koločep and Lopud in the same day, or Šipan at a sensible pace. One afternoon sailing does not call at Lopud.
