Money buys the road in Croatia, not the sea. Of 68 routes in the 2026 register only 24 carry a vehicle, and every one of those is a car ferry — no catamaran on the coast takes a car, at any price, in any season.
The published network does not have an upgrade tier
Most destinations have a premium version of the same infrastructure: a faster train, a business cabin, a lounge. The Croatian coastal network does not. It is a public service network priced by the state, and the fare table has a residents’ tariff below the visitor one and nothing above it. The first catamaran of the morning is the same catamaran for everybody on it.
That has a specific consequence for a high-budget trip, and it is not the one people expect. The constraint is not comfort. It is that the fast half of the network cannot carry your vehicle, so the private car and driver that solves every mainland problem becomes dead weight the moment the itinerary touches an island.
| Vessel type | Routes in the register | Carries a vehicle |
|---|---|---|
| Car ferry | 24 | Yes |
| Fast catamaran (state) | 16 | No |
| Commercial catamaran | 17 | No |
| Passenger ship | 11 | No |
Read down the right-hand column. 24 car ferries take vehicles and the other 44 routes do not, which means the fast, frequent, direct half of the coast is closed to anyone travelling with a car. A driver waiting on the far side is the standard answer, and it works, but it is two vehicles and two sets of transfers for one crossing.
Buying a private transfer to a problem that is a timetable
The request we get most often on this page is a car and driver for a route with three sea legs in it. A driver cannot cross to Hvar with you on the fast boat, cannot shorten the 20-minute Dominče crossing, and cannot make line 9807 call at Korčula in June.
What money does buy is the ability to stop caring about frequency: a private boat transfer replaces a fixed departure with one you choose, and on a chain route that is worth more than any hotel upgrade on the trip. Spend it on the legs that are thin, not on the legs the state already runs well.
The other thing worth buying is the last mile, which is where the register is unhelpful in a way no brochure mentions. Line 634 berths at Dominče, roughly 3 km from Korčula town rather than in the town harbour. Arriving there with luggage and no arrangement is the single most avoidable bad half-hour on the southern chain.
33 catamarans
in the register, and not one of them carries a vehicle
Where a large budget genuinely changes the itinerary is in removing the seasonality argument altogether. The reason ordinary chain routes fail outside high summer is that 17 of the 68 routes are commercial lines that stop when demand does. A private vessel does not have a season, which makes June and late September — the months with the best combination of empty towns and warm water — available in a way they are not otherwise. The honeymoon route is built on exactly that trade, and chartered sailing is the other way of buying out of the timetable.
What to decide before you book
- Decide whether the trip is a car trip or a boat trip. Only 24 of 68 routes carry a vehicle and none of the fast ones do.
- Spend on the thin legs, not the thick ones. The Split to Hvar corridor has sixteen services; the Korčula to Mljet leg has one, in season only.
- Arrange the last mile at Dominče. The Korčula car ferry berths roughly 3 km outside the town.
- Consider June or late September. A private vessel has no season, which is the only way those months buy you the whole chain.
The private version of this route is built by phone, not by search
Nothing above the state fare table is published anywhere, which is precisely why this page ends in a number rather than a booking form. Tell us the dates and how much of the timetable you want to opt out of, and we will build the version that does not depend on a commercial line still being in service.
What do you need to work out next?
The budget is the easy part. These decide where it goes.
Where to stay
Where does the money actually show?
The coast’s best rooms cluster in three towns, not along the whole shore.
Getting around
Is a charter better than a route?
A private vessel has no season; 17 of 68 public routes do.
When to go
Which month rewards a private boat most?
September holds 21.7 °C water in Split with the chain already closed.
Planning
How does the public chain behave?
It runs south, and the through-boats are all commercial lines.
