Hvar’s beaches: the island where the water stays warm longest

Of the three Croatian stations with a published sea normal, Hvar holds its heat longest: 22.4°C in September and 20.6°C in October, against Split’s 21.7 and 19.3. Thirteen of the sixteen services from Split reach Hvar town, and two carry a car.

The island keeps its water warm into the autumn

Hvar is one of only three places in Croatia where DHMZ publishes a monthly sea temperature, which is an accident of where the observing stations sit rather than a statement about the island. It happens to be useful, because the number it produces is the best late-season water on the published coast.

The August figures are within three tenths of each other and are not worth choosing between. The separation happens afterwards. By October Hvar is 1.3°C ahead of Split and 1.1°C ahead of Dubrovnik, and in November it is still at 18.0°C, which is warmer than Split manages in any month before June. If your dates are in the shoulder season, this is the one measurable reason to choose this island over the mainland.

And the air stays warm too, for an unusual number of days

The second half of the case is the length of the warm spell rather than its height. Hvar records 30.2 days at or above 25°C in July — more days than the month has, on the long-run mean, which is the statistical way of saying every day of it. September delivers 20.7, the highest of the three stations.

Read that against the sea row above and the island’s season is defined without a single adjective: warm air from June to September, warm water from June to October, and a November that is still swimmable for people who do not mind an empty beach.

What that means for a week on the island

Hvar runs east to west along a limestone spine that peaks at Sv. Nikola, 626 metres, and the two coasts either side of it are different propositions in different months. The figures above are the town station’s, on the south side, and the season they describe is longer at both ends than the mainland’s.

In practice that argues for moving your week later rather than earlier. July here records 14.0 days at or above 30°C and August 14.5, which is a fortnight of each month spent looking for shade that a pebble beach does not have. September gives 20.7 days at or above 25°C, 5.2 rain days, and water at 22.4°C — within 1.1°C of the annual peak. The month that reads as the compromise is measurably the better one for anything that involves being outside all day.

The boat decides where your beach day starts

Hvar is long, its ports are at different ends of it, and the boat you book determines which end you are standing on. Sixteen scheduled services connect Split with the island. Thirteen of them reach Hvar town. Two carry vehicles, and only one of those two, state line 604, docks at Hvar town at all — line 635 lands at Stari Grad, on the north side. Every catamaran on the corridor is foot passengers only.

of 16 services reach Hvar town

The fast half of the network is open

Thirteen services put you in Hvar town itself, and the frequent ones are catamarans. A beach day starts from the harbour, which is where the small boats out to the offshore islets go from, and you are not managing a vehicle at either end.

Counted from the 2026 ZOLPP register. Line 604's Hvar-town call is register-derived; its per-line timetable was not available, so no departure time or fare for it appears here.

For most people that resolves quickly. If the beaches you want are the ones reached from the town harbour, a car is a liability and the catamaran is the right boat. If you intend to work along the island by road, the choice of vehicle service also chooses your base, and that decision is made before you book the ferry, not after.

A car changes which end of the island your beach day starts from

The two vehicle services do not land in the same town. Line 604 calls at Hvar town; line 635 lands at Stari Grad. Book the wrong one and every beach day of the trip begins with a road transfer across the island, in both directions, on top of the crossing.

The compounding cost is the timetable. The vehicle services are the infrequent half of the corridor, so a mistimed return means either an early finish at the beach or a night you did not plan. Decide where you are sleeping on Hvar first, then pick the service that lands there.

Set against the calendar, the island’s strongest week is not the one most people book. October at Hvar still means 17.7°C mean air, 20.6°C water and 3.6 days at or above 25°C, with 6.4 hours of sunshine a day. That is a swimming month for anyone who does not need heat on land: the water is running 2.9°C ahead of the air by then, and it goes on doing so through November. Whether the ferry timetable still suits you by then is the separate question, and it is the one to check first.

What do you need to work out next?

The island and the boat are decided. These come next.
